Help:Translation Guidelines

The steps for translating on most wikis are the following:

Adding in interwiki data

The first step to make subpages working properly is integrating interwiki data.

1. Find the language code of the language you'd like to translate to, or ask the administration team for one.
   1. For a list of language codes, please see the MediaWiki repository on GitHub.
2. Talk to your local admin and have them go into the interwiki data to add in your language.
   1. See Truck Sim Wiki interwiki data, for example.
   2. Create an interwiki link for English and any other language codes you want to support.
3. If your wiki doesn't already have it, create a Community Portal.
   1. After this, create a Translation portal page to easily find active translation projects.
4. Talk to your local admin to implement Interwiki Dropdown Button to easily switch between interwiki language wikis.

Creating subpages

Creating language code subpages should only be done on the English wiki if an independent language wiki isn't established.

1. Create a new page with "/languagecode" added to the end of the pagename of the page you wish to translate. If you want to translate the page "Water" to Spanish, you would create page "Water/es".

   2. Once there are enough translated pages to be moved to their own wiki, this naming model can be abandoned in favour of fully translated titles (more information down below).
2. Translate the text of the page and at the bottom of the page, add the page to the category: [[Category:LANGUAGECODE translation]].
   1. For example, translating a page to Spanish would have [[Category:ES translation]] added to the bottom of the edit.
   2. This will put all translated pages of one language into a single category.
3. After translating the page put {{DISPLAYTITLE:CHANGE}} at the top of the page and replace the "CHANGE" with your native language.
   1. For example, the Palia Wiki about the Crops.
4. Once the page is fully translated, you may add [[en:PAGENAME]] and [[LANGUAGECODE:PAGENAME]] to the end of your translated article.
   1. For templates, just add [[LANGUAGECODE:Template:{{PAGENAME}}]
   2. Note, this will only work if Interwiki Data was setup as read in Help:Translation Guidelines#Adding in Interwiki Data.
5. Now it's time to translate more articles, update them, maintain and moderate these sub-articles.

Independent wikis

How do I get a language code URL?

Take https://ark.wiki.gg/it/ for example. It has its own separate wiki.

A full, separate wiki can be requested once following texts had been translated, and there is a person in place willing to be the admin of that translated wiki and moderate it:

1. Main page translated.
2. Articles linked on the main page translated.
3. Have more than 25 articles fully translated.
4. When a translated wiki is ready to be moved to a separate wiki, have your wiki admin get in contact with a wiki.gg staff member.

Linking images

Please do not re-upload any files from the English wiki, as this often results in errors and wastes servers' disk space. Instead, create a file redirect and mark it with a LANGUAGECODE image redirects category.

For example, to set up an image in the French wiki called Wood or Bois:

1. Open [[File:Bois.png]] for example in your browser by typing it directly into the address bar.
2. Create the page according to this template: #REDIRECT [[File:Wood.png]][[Category:FR image redirects]].
3. Save the page. The French wiki should start showing the icon in around 10–20 minutes.
